The Zebra DS4608-XD is the specialist member of the DS4600 family. XD stands for extra dense: it is built to read the very small, very tightly printed codes that defeat a normal scanner, down to 2 mil Code 39 and 4 mil DataMatrix, as well as direct part marks — codes laser-etched, dot-peened or chemically etched straight onto a component with no label at all. At the other end of its range it still reads a four-inch-wide carton label, so one scanner covers the whole factory instead of two.

This is the scanner for Indian electronics manufacturing, EMS and PCB assembly, medical device and precision engineering plants, and any operation that has to trace individual components. A 1,280 x 800 imager with true green circular aiming and warm white illumination gives it the optical resolution to resolve tiny cells, and the body is built for the floor: 1.8 m drops onto concrete and 2,000 tumbles, well beyond a normal retail scanner.

Why Choose This Product?

Buy this only if you actually have dense or direct-marked codes. The XD is optimised for very small symbols at close range, which means its far working distance on ordinary retail barcodes is shorter than a standard DS4608 or a DS2208. For a shop counter, a supermarket or general warehouse work it is the wrong tool and an expensive one — a DS2208 will serve you better and cost far less.

How to Use

1. Plug the cable into the base of the scanner until it clicks, then connect the USB end to your PC or line terminal.
2. Wait for the power-up beep — it is recognised as a keyboard, so no driver is needed for standard use.
3. Open Notepad and test with your smallest real code and your widest carton label to confirm both ends of the range.
4. For direct part marks, hold the scanner close and let the green circular aimer sit on the mark; change the angle slightly if the etched surface is reflecting the illumination straight back.
5. Use Zebra's free 123Scan utility to enable DPM decoding modes, add prefixes or suffixes, and save the configuration to every scanner on the line.
