Product Overview

The Zebra DS1001 is the entry point into Zebra's handheld scanner range. It is a corded USB imager that reads both 1D barcodes and 2D codes β€” including QR codes shown on a customer's phone screen, which a laser scanner physically cannot do. It plugs in, is recognised as a keyboard by Windows, and starts working without drivers or software. That combination of a real Zebra imager at an entry price is what makes it the sensible first scanner for a small Indian shop.

It suits kirana and supermarket counters, pharmacies, mobile and accessory shops, small warehouses, libraries and clinic front desks. It matters more than it sounds that it reads phone screens: UPI QR payments, digital coupons, e-way and delivery QR codes, marketplace return labels and DigiLocker documents all arrive on glass now. A cheap laser scanner will refuse all of them. The DS1001 also works hands-free in presentation mode when you set it in a stand, so it can sit at a counter and scan whatever is held up to it.

Key Features

  • Reads both 1D barcodes and 2D codes including QR β€” including codes displayed on mobile phone screens
  • Corded USB with automatic host interface detection β€” true plug and play on Windows, Linux and most POS software
  • Works handheld with the trigger, or hands-free in presentation mode when placed in a stand
  • Omnidirectional scanning β€” the barcode does not have to be lined up with a scan line
  • IP40 sealing against dust and small particles
  • Designed to survive 1.2 m drops onto hard floors
  • Configurable by scanning setup barcodes, or with Zebra's free 123Scan PC utility
  • Backed by Zebra service and spares in India, unlike unbranded counter scanners

Why Choose This Product?

We should be straight about what this is. The DS1001 is Zebra's entry model, not a DS2208 or a DS4608. It is IP40 rather than IP52, rated to 1.2 m drops rather than 1.5 m or 1.8 m, and its motion tolerance is modest β€” this is a scanner for a shop counter and a stockroom, not for a high-throughput checkout lane or a dusty loading dock. If you scan more than a few hundred items an hour, or you work outdoors or in a warehouse, step up to the DS2208.

Within that scope it is very good value. You get genuine 2D imaging including phone-screen reading, Zebra's decoding quality on damaged and poorly printed barcodes, hands-free presentation mode without buying a separate scanner, and a support and spares channel that exists in India. The alternative at this price is usually an unbranded 1D laser that cannot read a UPI QR code and has no service path when it fails β€” a false saving the first time a customer holds up a phone.

Applications

Kirana, supermarket and pharmacy counters

Scan product barcodes into your billing software, and scan customer QR codes and coupons off phone screens at the same counter without swapping devices.

Mobile, electronics and accessory retail

Read IMEI barcodes, warranty codes and small dense 2D codes printed on retail boxes and on the devices themselves.

Small warehouse and stock rooms

Goods-inward checking, stock counts and picking against a spreadsheet or a basic inventory app on a PC β€” the scanner types straight into whichever field the cursor is in.

Clinics, libraries and offices

Patient or member card scanning, book issue and return, file and asset tracking, and document QR codes at a reception desk.

What's Included in the Box

Standard pack: the unit plus its interface cable. Contents vary by part number, so confirm the pack list on WhatsApp before ordering if a specific accessory matters.

How to Use

  1. Plug the USB cable into the scanner and into a free USB port on your PC or billing machine.
  2. Wait a few seconds β€” Windows detects it as a keyboard. No driver installation is needed for normal keyboard-wedge use.
  3. Open Notepad, click into it and scan any barcode. If the digits appear, the scanner is working.
  4. Click into the barcode field of your billing or inventory software and scan β€” the data goes wherever the cursor is.
  5. To scan hands-free, set the scanner in a stand and scan the Presentation Mode setup barcode from the quick start guide; use 123Scan if you need to add a prefix, suffix or Enter key.
