How the TIP122 Darlington Transistor Works
The TIP122 is a Darlington pair - two NPN transistors connected internally so the emitter of the first feeds the base of the second. This cascaded arrangement multiplies the individual gains, producing an overall hFE of 1000 or more. In practical terms, a base current of just 3-5 mA (easily supplied by an Arduino or Raspberry Pi GPIO pin through a 1 kOhm resistor) can fully saturate the transistor and switch up to 5A of load current.
The TO-220 package includes a metal tab connected to the collector, making it simple to bolt the transistor to an aluminium heatsink for thermal management in continuous-duty applications. An internal damper diode from collector to emitter provides built-in protection when switching inductive loads such as motors or relay coils.
