How It Works
The Soil Moisture Sensor Module operates on the principle of electrical conductivity. The two exposed prongs act as a variable resistor whose resistance changes with the water content in the surrounding soil. Wet soil conducts electricity more easily (lower resistance), while dry soil has higher resistance. The onboard circuitry converts this resistance change into a readable voltage signal. The analog output (AO) delivers a continuous voltage (typically 0-4.2V at 5V supply) that you can map to a 0-1023 range using an ADC - giving you a granular moisture percentage.
