S550 Hexacopter Combo Kit
The S550 Hexacopter Combo Kit is a six-rotor drone platform for aerial photography, surveying, research and autonomous flight projects. Six arms on a 550mm wheelbase spread the lift across six motors, giving steadier hover, more payload headroom and better wind handling than a quadcopter of similar size.
Key Features
- 550mm hexagonal frame with six motor arms for stable, redundant lift
- Combo kit with the propulsion set (motors and ESCs) to build the full airframe
- Central plates with room for a flight controller, GPS, receiver and power distribution
- Works with Pixhawk, APM and similar flight controllers set to hexacopter mode
- Mounting space for a camera gimbal or sensor payload
Applications
- Aerial photography and video with a gimbal-mounted camera
- Crop monitoring and mapping with camera or multispectral payloads
- Engineering college drone projects and autonomous mission research
- Inspection of towers, rooftops and structures
Assembly Overview
Assemble the frame arms onto the centre plates and use threadlocker on the screws. Mount the six motors, connect each to its ESC and check rotation direction. Fit the flight controller on vibration dampers, wire the ESC signal leads in hexacopter order and calibrate the compass, accelerometer and ESCs in Mission Planner or QGroundControl. Balance the propellers and run motor tests before the first flight in an open area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a hexacopter over a quadcopter?
Six rotors share the load, so each motor works less hard, payload capacity goes up and the aircraft stays more stable in wind. With a suitable flight controller a hexacopter can also stay controllable if one motor fails.
Which flight controller works with the S550?
Any controller that supports a hexacopter frame type, such as Pixhawk-series boards running ArduPilot or PX4, or APM for simpler builds.
What battery should I use?
Most S550 builds use a 4S LiPo; choose capacity based on total weight and the flight time you need, and keep a 20-30% reserve when landing.
