How It Works

The DHT22 module combines a capacitive polymer humidity sensor with an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor inside a single housing. An integrated microcontroller reads both sensors, performs calibration compensation using factory-stored coefficients, and transmits the data as a 40-bit digital signal over a single data line. Your host microcontroller sends a start pulse, then the DHT22 responds with 16 bits of humidity data, 16 bits of temperature data, and an 8-bit checksum for error detection - all without requiring an ADC or complex wiring.
