How It Works

The sensor operates on the principle that the dielectric constant of soil changes with its moisture content. The capacitive sensing area forms one plate of a capacitor, with the surrounding soil acting as the dielectric medium. As soil moisture increases, the dielectric constant rises, which increases the capacitance. The onboard circuit converts this capacitance change into an analog voltage - wetter soil produces a lower voltage, and drier soil produces a higher voltage. Simply connect the output pin to an analog input on your microcontroller, read the ADC value, and map it to a moisture percentage through calibration.
