Key Features of 3mm IR Pair
- Matched Pair: Emitter and receiver are wavelength-matched at 940nm for optimal detection accuracy and signal strength
- Compact 3mm Form Factor: Small size fits easily on breadboards, PCBs, and tight robot chassis layouts
- Low Power Consumption: Operates at just 20mA, making it perfect for battery-powered and microcontroller-driven projects
- Invisible IR Beam: 940nm wavelength is invisible to the human eye, enabling discreet sensing without visual interference
- Wide Compatibility: Works seamlessly with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, STM32, PIC, and all common microcontrollers
- Breadboard Friendly: Standard through-hole pins plug directly into breadboards and perfboards for rapid prototyping
Perfect For
- Line-Following Robot: Mount the IR pair facing downward to detect black lines on a white surface - the foundation of every classic robotics project
- Object/Obstacle Detection: Position emitter and receiver side by side to detect reflected IR light from nearby objects for collision avoidance
- Proximity Sensor: Build a simple proximity switch that activates when a hand or object comes within range - great for touchless switches
- Visitor Counter: Place the IR pair across a doorway to count people entering and exiting a room with microcontroller-based counting logic
- Speed/RPM Measurement: Use the IR pair with a slotted disc attached to a motor shaft to measure rotational speed for tachometer projects
- Optical Encoder: Create a DIY rotary encoder by pairing with a coded disc for position feedback in motor control systems
- IR Communication Link: Transmit simple data wirelessly over short distances using modulated IR signals between two microcontrollers
- Edge Detection for Robots: Mount facing downward on a tabletop robot to detect table edges and prevent falls
- Security Beam Break Alarm: Set up an invisible tripwire that triggers a buzzer or alert when the IR beam is interrupted
- Liquid Level Sensor: Detect liquid levels in transparent containers by monitoring IR beam transmission through the container wall
3mm IR Pair - Infrared Emitter & Receiver LED Set
Compact 3mm infrared transmitter and receiver pair from Tech Depot India, Bengaluru. Ideal for object detection, line-following robots, proximity sensing, and optical communication projects. Operates at 940nm wavelength for reliable, invisible IR beam transmission.
How It Works
The 3mm IR pair consists of two components that work together. The IR emitter (transmitter LED) emits infrared light at 940nm when forward-biased with a current-limiting resistor. The IR receiver (photodiode) detects this infrared light and changes its conductivity accordingly. When an object is placed between or in front of the pair, the IR beam is either blocked or reflected, causing a measurable change in the receiver's output. This change can be read by a microcontroller's analog or digital pin to detect presence, distance, or surface color (for line following).
Basic Wiring Guide
IR Emitter (Transmitter) Circuit: Connect the anode (longer leg) of the IR LED through a 220Ohm current-limiting resistor to 5V (or 3.3V with 100Ohm resistor). Connect the cathode (shorter leg) to GND. The IR LED will
