Key Features of 2.2inch Flex Sensor
- Analog Resistance Output: Resistance increases proportionally as the sensor is bent, providing smooth and continuous analog readings for precise angle detection.
- Compact 2.2-inch Form Factor: Small enough to integrate into gloves, wearables, prosthetics, and tight mechanical assemblies without adding bulk.
- Simple Voltage Divider Interface: Requires only one external resistor to create a voltage divider circuit - no complex driver boards or libraries needed.
- Wide Compatibility: Works seamlessly with Arduino (analogRead), ESP32, Raspberry Pi (with external ADC like MCP3008), and virtually any microcontroller with an analog input.
- Durable & Long-Lasting: Rated for over 1 million bend cycles, built on a flexible polymer substrate with carbon-based resistive ink that maintains accuracy over time.
- Bidirectional Sensitivity: Primarily designed for one-direction bending but can detect flex in both directions with appropriate calibration.
- Low Power Consumption: Draws minimal current in a voltage divider configuration, making it suitable for battery-powered and portable applications.
- Wide Operating Temperature: Functions reliably from -35 degreesC to +80 degreesC, suitable for outdoor and industrial environments.
- Proven Reliability: Over 1 million bend cycle lifespan ensures consistent performance across extended use in projects and products.
- Beginner-Friendly: Simple two-wire interface with voltage divider - no libraries, drivers, or complex protocols required to get started.
How It Works
The 2.2-inch Flex Sensor is a variable resistor that operates on a simple principle: when the sensor is flat (unbent), its resistance is at its nominal value (~25 kOhm). As you bend the sensor, the carbon resistive element on the substrate stretches and its resistance increases - typically reaching 50-100 kOhm at a 90 degrees bend. By placing the flex sensor in a voltage divider circuit with a fixed resistor (typically 10 kOhm-47 kOhm), the changing resistance produces a varying voltage that can be read by any microcontroller's analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The greater the bend, the higher the resistance, and the lower (or higher, depending on configuration) the output voltage. This analog signal can then be mapped to bend angle, used as a threshold trigger, or processed for gesture recognition algorithms.
Wiring Guide
| Configuration | Connection |
| Flex Sensor Pin 1 | Connect to VCC (3.3V or 5V) |
| Flex Sensor Pin 2 | Connect to Analog Input (e.g., A0) AND to GND through a fixed resistor (10kOhm-47kOhm) |
| Fixed Resistor | Between Flex Sensor Pin 2 and GND (forms voltage divider) |
| Analog Output | Read at the junction of Flex Sensor Pin 2 and the fixed resistor |
Tip: Choose a fixed resistor value close to the flex sensor's nominal flat resistance (~25 kOhm) for maximum sensitivity and voltage swing across the ADC range.
