Quick answer
To find which RAM is compatible with your laptop, check three things: the memory generation (DDR3 or DDR4), the form factor (laptop RAM is SO-DIMM) and the maximum capacity and speed your model supports. DDR3 and DDR4 are not interchangeable, so the generation must match exactly. Your laptop manual or a free tool such as CPU-Z will tell you.
This guide answers which RAM is compatible with my laptop and explains the DDR4 vs DDR3 RAM difference in plain language. It links to the real modules in our RAM collection. We keep prices out of the guide because they change; each product page shows the live price.
DDR3 vs DDR4 vs DDR5: physical differences
| Generation | Desktop (DIMM) | Laptop (SO-DIMM) | Typical voltage | Notch position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DDR3 | 240-pin | 204-pin | 1.5V (DDR3L is 1.35V) | Different from DDR4 |
| DDR4 | 288-pin | 260-pin | 1.2V | Different from DDR3 and DDR5 |
| DDR5 | 288-pin | 262-pin | 1.1V | Different from DDR4 |
The pin counts and notch positions mean a module physically will not fit the wrong slot. Do not try to force it. DDR4 is generally faster and more power-efficient than DDR3, but you cannot upgrade a DDR3 laptop to DDR4 modules.
How to check what your laptop needs
- Find the exact model name. It is on a label under the laptop or in Settings, System, About.
- Read the manual or the maker's spec page for memory type, maximum capacity, number of slots and supported speed.
- Use Windows Task Manager. Open Performance, then Memory. It shows the speed, slots in use and form factor, which will say SODIMM on a laptop.
- Use CPU-Z. The Memory and SPD tabs show the generation, size and speed of each installed module.
- Check for soldered memory. Many thin laptops solder RAM to the board. If only one slot exists or the manual says onboard memory, it cannot be expanded in the usual way.

Speed, capacity and dual channel
- Speed. If your RAM is faster than the laptop supports, it runs at the supported speed. If you mix speeds, everything runs at the slowest module.
- Capacity. Respect the maximum your model lists. Installing more than the maximum may not be recognised.
- Dual channel. Two matching modules in two slots give better bandwidth than one large module. A laptop with two slots and one stick is an easy upgrade: add a second matching stick.
For desktops, the same rules apply with DIMM modules. If you are upgrading a PC platform, our motherboard guide covers which boards use DDR3 or DDR4, and the processor guide lists matching chips.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying by capacity and speed alone and ignoring the generation. A 16GB module is useless if it is the wrong type for your slot.
- Ordering desktop DIMMs for a laptop. Laptops take the shorter SO-DIMM modules.
- Assuming every slot is free. Open the service cover or check the manual to see how many slots are filled.
- Ignoring low-voltage DDR3L. Some laptops need 1.35V modules, so read the voltage line in the specification.
- Skipping a restart check. After installing, confirm the total in Task Manager and run a memory test if the machine behaves oddly.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put DDR4 RAM in a laptop that uses DDR3?
No. DDR3 and DDR4 modules have the notch in a different position and use different voltages, so they cannot be swapped. Your laptop supports one generation only, and you must buy that generation.
Can I mix a 4GB and an 8GB module?
It often works if both are the same type and form factor, but the system may run in a less efficient mode and at the speed of the slower module. Two matching modules are the safest choice for dual-channel performance.
What happens if I buy faster RAM than my laptop supports?
The module normally runs at the highest speed your processor and board allow. For example, 3200MHz RAM in a laptop limited to 2666MHz will run at the lower speed. You pay for speed you do not use, so match the supported speed where you can.
How much RAM do I need?
8GB is a sensible baseline for web browsing, office work and light multitasking. 16GB suits heavy multitasking, photo editing and modern games. Always check the maximum capacity your laptop supports.
Is it worth upgrading RAM on an older DDR3 laptop?
Often yes. Moving from 4GB to 8GB can make an older laptop noticeably smoother, especially when combined with an SSD. Check the maximum your model accepts before you buy.
