Quick answer
For gaming at a mid-range budget, target a six-core processor. The Ryzen 5 5600X, Core i5-10400F and Core i5-11400F are the usual shortlist, and the graphics card matters more than the CPU for frame rates in most games. Go for a four-core chip like the Core i3-10105F only on a tight budget.
If you are hunting for the best processor for gaming under 15000, remember that the processor fixes your motherboard and memory type too, so you are choosing a whole platform. Prices change, so this guide leaves them out; open a product page for the live price and sort the Processors collection to compare against your limit.
Processors compared by platform
Specs are from the product titles. The socket decides which motherboard you need.

How to pick the right processor
- Start with your existing parts. If you already own a motherboard, the socket and chipset decide your shortlist. Our motherboard guide explains which boards fit which chips.
- Prefer six cores for gaming. Four cores still work for esports, but six cores and twelve threads leave headroom for background apps and demanding games.
- Read the suffix. F means no integrated graphics, K means unlocked multiplier, and no suffix on a Core chip means integrated graphics are included.
- Balance the build. A strong CPU with a weak graphics card, or the reverse, wastes money. See the graphics card guide for sensible pairings.
- Check memory type. The platforms above all use DDR4. Our RAM compatibility guide explains the difference between DDR3 and DDR4.
Intel LGA 1151 has two generations
This catches many buyers out. LGA 1151 sockets look identical, but 6th and 7th generation chips such as the Intel Core i7-7700 need a 100 or 200-series board, while 8th and 9th generation chips such as the Intel Core i5-9400F need a 300-series board. They are not cross-compatible. Some 300-series boards also need a BIOS update before they accept a 9th generation chip, so read the board maker's CPU support list.
AMD or Intel for gaming?
At the mainstream tier both are capable. AMD AM4 offers a long upgrade path, for example moving from a Ryzen 5 3500 to a Ryzen 5 5600X on the same board when the BIOS allows it. Intel LGA 1200 chips such as the Intel Core i5-10400F suit builders who want a simple, well-supported platform. Choose on the combined cost of processor and motherboard, not the processor alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best processor for gaming under 15000?
For a balanced gaming build, a six-core processor is the sensible target. The Ryzen 5 5600X, Core i5-10400F and Core i5-11400F are the usual shortlist here. Check each product page for the live price against your budget, and spend a larger share of the total build on the graphics card.
What does the F in Intel processor names mean?
The F means the chip has no integrated graphics. You must install a separate graphics card to get a display. Models without the F, such as the Core i5-11400, include integrated graphics that can drive a monitor on their own.
Do I need a Z-series motherboard for a K processor?
Only if you want to overclock. A K or KF chip such as the Core i5-9600KF works on other compatible boards at normal speeds, but the multiplier unlock is available only on Z-series chipsets.
Is a Ryzen 5 5600X better than a Core i5-11400F for gaming?
Both are six-core, twelve-thread chips that handle modern games well. The Ryzen 5 5600X is generally stronger in single-thread work, while the Core i5-11400F is a strong alternative on LGA 1200. Compare the live prices of the processor and its matching motherboard together.
Will a processor work on any motherboard with the same socket?
Not always. Chipset and BIOS version also matter. For example, Intel 9th generation chips need a 300-series board on LGA 1151, and Ryzen 5000 chips need a BIOS that supports them on older AM4 boards.
