How It Works
The ZMPT101B module uses a miniature voltage transformer to step down AC mains voltage to a safe, low-amplitude AC signal. This signal passes through an onboard op-amp conditioning circuit that adds a DC offset of Vcc/2 (approximately 2.5V when powered at 5V), producing a clean sinusoidal waveform centered around the midpoint. You connect the analog output pin to any ADC channel on your microcontroller, sample the waveform over one or more complete cycles, and calculate the RMS voltage using software. The onboard potentiometer allows you to adjust the output amplitude so the waveform fills as much of the ADC range as possible for maximum precision. Because the transformer provides galvanic isolation, there is no direct electrical connection between the dangerous mains voltage and your microcontroller circuit.
