The VL53LDK measures distance by timing how long a laser pulse takes to bounce back off a target, giving noticeably tighter accuracy and faster response than an infrared analog sensor like the classic Sharp GP2Y series. That laser ToF approach holds up better against varying surface colour and reflectivity, which is where IR proximity sensors tend to drift.
It's built for robotics and automation work — obstacle avoidance, autonomous navigation, and object detection — and interfaces cleanly with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 over standard digital protocols rather than needing analog calibration.
