How It Works
The TCRT5000 IR sensor module operates on the principle of infrared reflection. The onboard IR LED continuously emits infrared light at 950nm. When an object or surface is within the detection range (1-25mm), the emitted IR light reflects back and is captured by the phototransistor. The amount of reflected light varies based on distance and surface color - lighter surfaces reflect more IR light while darker surfaces absorb it. The reflected signal is processed by the LM393 comparator, which compares it against a threshold set by the onboard potentiometer. When the reflected intensity exceeds the threshold, the digital output pin goes LOW, indicating detection. The analog output simultaneously provides a continuous voltage proportional to the reflected IR intensity, enabling more granular measurements for applications requiring variable distance or reflectance data.
