How to Use the LM7809
- Basic Wiring: Connect unregulated DC (11V-35V) to Pin 1 (INPUT), ground to Pin 2 (GND), and take regulated 9V from Pin 3 (OUTPUT).
- Input Capacitor: Place a 0.33uF ceramic or electrolytic capacitor between the INPUT pin and GND, close to the IC, to prevent oscillation - especially if the power source is far from the regulator.
- Output Capacitor: Place a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor between the OUTPUT pin and GND to improve transient response and output stability.
- Heatsink Requirement: At higher input voltages or load currents, the IC dissipates significant heat. Calculate power dissipation as P = (Vin 9V) x Iload. Use an appropriate TO-220 heatsink when dissipation exceeds 1W.
- Minimum Load: The LM7809 requires a minimum load current of approximately 5mA for proper regulation.
- Protection Diodes: For applications with large output capacitors, add a reverse-biased diode from output to input to protect the IC during power-off discharge.
