How It Works - Basic Circuit
The LM317 uses a simple resistor-divider network to set the output voltage. Connect a fixed resistor (R1, typically 240Ohm) between the Output and Adjust pins, and a second resistor (R2) between the Adjust pin and ground. The output voltage is calculated as:
V_out = 1.25V x (1 + R2 / R1)
For best performance, add a 0.1uF ceramic capacitor at the input and a 1uF electrolytic capacitor at the output to ensure stability and reduce noise. A protection diode across the output-to-input pins is recommended when using large output capacitors.
