How It Works
The HMC5883L module contains three magneto-resistive sensors aligned along the X, Y, and Z axes. These sensors detect the strength and direction of the surrounding magnetic field, including Earth's magnetic field. The onboard 12-bit analog-to-digital converter digitizes the readings and makes them available over the I2C bus. Your microcontroller reads the raw magnetic field values from the sensor's registers and then calculates the compass heading using the arctangent function: heading = atan2(Y, Z). With proper calibration to compensate for local magnetic interference (hard-iron and soft-iron distortion), the module delivers reliable directional data for navigation and orientation applications.
