How It Works
The IR transmitter is an infrared LED that emits invisible 940nm light when forward-biased. The IR receiver is a photodiode that conducts current proportionally to the intensity of infrared light hitting its junction. When an object is placed between or in front of the pair, the reflected or interrupted IR beam changes the receiver's output, which can be read by a microcontroller's analog or digital input pin. A simple voltage divider circuit with the photodiode and a pull-up resistor converts the light intensity change into a measurable voltage signal.
Typical Circuit Configuration
- Transmitter Circuit: Connect the IR LED anode to VCC (5V) through a 100Ohm-220Ohm current-limiting resistor; cathode to GND
- Receiver Circuit: Connect the photodiode cathode to VCC and anode to GND through a 10KOhm pull-down resistor; tap the voltage at the junction for analog/digital reading
