How the 1N4148 Works

The 1N4148 is a silicon planar switching diode constructed using epitaxial technology for fast switching performance. Like all PN-junction diodes, it allows current to flow in one direction (from anode to cathode) when forward biased above its threshold voltage (~0.7V) and blocks current flow when reverse biased up to its rated breakdown voltage of 100V.

What distinguishes the 1N4148 from standard rectifier diodes (such as the 1N4007) is its extremely fast reverse recovery time. When a diode switches from conducting (forward bias) to blocking (reverse bias), there is a brief moment where reverse current flows as stored charge in the junction is depleted. The 1N4148 accomplishes this transition in under 4 nanoseconds, making it suitable for circuits operating at frequencies well into the MHz range.

The black band printed on the glass body indicates the cathode terminal. Current flows from anode to cathode in normal forward-biased operation. When reading a schematic, the cathode corresponds to the bar side of the diode triangle symbol.
